In the 1970s, when Paul Volcker was cranking up interest rates to kill off inflation, he could do that because the size of the federal debt was only about 30% of the GDP at the time. Today, the federal debt is about 130% of GDP.  No matter what Jerome Powell’s intentions are, even if he has the same fortitude as Volcker had in fighting inflation, he just doesn’t have the tools. In fact, he has nothing he can really do.
